McDonald’s, police, planners vow to sort traffic chaos

It’s not been the smoothest of introductions for McDonald’s to Welshpool, and now police, Powys County Council and the Welsh Government have vowed to work with the restaurant to sort the traffic and parking problems caused by the new drive-thru.

A week on from its grand opening, pictures of cars backed up on the by-pass and local residents raising the alarm over parking, access and litter issues have blighted its introduction.

Powys County Council said that the “novelty” of the newly opened drive-thru combined with the Bank Holiday weekend traffic caused the build-up.

And the police have confirmed that they are now involved in trying and resolve the issues.

“Concern has been raised in connection with the traffic problems and parking in the area,” said a spokesperson. “The issue will be discussed with partners to ensure the safety of all road users.”

The restaurant itself said that new regulations in place post-pandemic have resulted in longer times to serve customers, but they have promised to work with the police to find a solution.

“To help keep our people and our customers safe, we have introduced a number of additional measures and changes to our restaurants, which means it is taking a little longer than usual to serve people at our drive-thru,” said a McDonald’s spokesperson.

“We are keen to play an active role to help manage traffic flow and will work closely with the local police on our approach.”

A spokesperson for Powys County Council told us: “We are aware that the novelty of the newly opened McDonald’s drive-thru and the bank holiday weekend caused a build-up of traffic in the area over the weekend.

“The council’s highways development control team are liaising with McDonalds and the Welsh Government (as the owner of the industrial estate road) and NMWTRA (as WG’s agent for the trunk road) to secure suitable solutions going forward regarding the parking issues on the industrial estate road and Rhallt Lane, and the queuing back to the trunk road.”
