New local branch for Marie Curie

24/06/2011 @ 03:11

A Welshpool & District branch has been formed for the Marie Curie Nurses and is open to fund raising suggestions and support.

The Marie Curie Nursing Service helps people who are approaching the end of their lives to remain at home if they wish to through its nationwide network of Marie Curie Nurses who provide nursing care at home.

The service is free and relies on the good will of fund raisers and local businesswoman Kaye Derwas has become Chairperson of the local branch, which has already raised £2,000. More fundraising is planned and Welshpool Fire Station has chosen Marie Curie as its charity of the year.

“When my mum was ill last year we were fortunate enough to be offered the services of Marie Curie Nurses,” explained Kaye: “Even though I had heard of them I didn’t really know what they did. At 10pm every night for the last week of mum’s illness a Marie Curie nurse came in and sat with her. They are not allowed TV or computers. You provide a kettle and a comfortable seat for them and then they take over. They were a Godsend, absolute angels, and I want to do as much as I can to give back.”

Marie Curie Nurses generally spend several hours at a time in a person’s home providing nursing care and emotional support, often overnight.
