Big National Retailer eyes Welshpool

Mywelshpool can reveal that national retail giant Home Bargains is close to confirming a 700 square metre Welshpool shop which would create around 40 jobs.

A report commissioned by Tesco to survey the state of the town’s retail industry has been leaked to mywelshpool and it also confirms that Argos, Farmfoods, Pets at Home, River Island, Specsavers, Starbucks, Waitrose and Floors-2-Go have ‘all expressed an interest in Welshpool as part of a nationwide search’.

The document, authored by planning consultants DPP, was commissioned by Tesco to ‘sell’ Welshpool to major retailers in a bid to take up the four giant units set aside for development as part of the overall Tesco development.

While a spokesperson for Home Bargains said “Welshpool is on our radar but nothing is confirmed yet”, we can confirm that official moves have been made and building work could commence as early as July in a bid for the shop to be open for Christmas.

“It is my understanding that Tesco hope to have Unit 4 operational by Christmas so the news that Home Bargains is coming is encouraging,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson.

Home Bargains operates more than 200 shops across the country and has emerged from the recession as a real high street powerhouse. Unit 4 is the furthest one away from Tesco and is next to the canal (pictured).
