28/06/2011 @ 08:32

Four men have escaped with cash after holding up a security van at Welshpool's Tesco store.

The robbery took place late last night as security guards from G4S were transferring cash at the store. It is not known if they were replenishing cash machines or transferring store takings. Police said they do not know at this stage if any weapons were used in the robbery and have appealed for witnesses.

A police statement said: "Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating a ‘Cash in Transit’ robbery from a G4S vehicle at the Tesco store in Welshpool. The incident occurred at 23:46hrs on Monday, 27 June 2011. Police are looking for four individuals in regards to the robbery. At this stage it’s believed that no weapons were used."

Members of the public who witnessed the robbery or have information should contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.

It is the third time in six months that Welshpool has been in the thick of a serious robbery. Just before Christmas, armed robbers fought with a jewellery shop owner on Church Street before fleeing empty handed while last month robbers from a Machynlleth bank robbery set off on foot after ditching their getaway car at The Flash. Also just before Christmas the Nationwide in Newtown was hit as a security van delivered cash.
