Tesco has confirmed it is helping police with their manhunt after a security van was raided on their premises just before midnight.

Four men escaped with cash after holding up the security van at Welshpool's Tesco store. The robbery took place shortly before midnight as security guards from G4S were transferring cash at the store. It is not known if they were replenishing cash machines or transferring store takings.

And Tesco has said this lunch time that: “We can confirm there was an incident at our store. We are assisting the police with their enquiries.”

Police said they do not know for certain if any weapons were used in the robbery and have appealed for witnesses.

A police statement said: "Dyfed-Powys Police is investigating a ‘Cash in Transit’ robbery from a G4S vehicle at the Tesco store in Welshpool. The incident occurred at 23:46hrs on Monday, 27 June 2011. Police are looking for four individuals in regards to the robbery. At this stage it’s believed that no weapons were used."

Members of the public who witnessed the robbery or have information should contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.

It is the third time in six months that Welshpool has been in the thick of a serious robbery. Just before Christmas, armed robbers clashed with a jewellery shop owner on Church Street before fleeing empty handed while last month robbers from a Machynlleth bank robbery set off on foot after ditching their getaway car at The Flash. Also just before Christmas the Nationwide in Newtown was hit as a security van delivered cash.
