Vandals have ‘cost us thousands’

30/06/2011 @ 11:12

The Friday night town centre rampage which saw yobs spray fire extinguishers into town centre businesses has cost one shop “thousands”.

Popular card and gift shop The Celtic Company was one of a number of premises targeted by vandals who also struck the Alan Price Fruit and Veg shop as well as The Angel on Berriew Street.

And its owner says they have been left counting the cost which will run into thousands of pounds with stock damaged and the shop set to close for a specialist clean-up operation.

“The dry powder coated all of the inside of the shop causing significant damage to the stock and fixtures and fittings,” said owner, Ros Jones: “The powder has literally covered all the goods in the front shop and the mess had to be seen to be believed. It is very upsetting for me and the staff as the shop was looking lovely with loads of new items for the summer season.

“We have tried to clean up as best we can, but it looks as though we will have to close temporarily for specialists to come in. Our insurers, the NFU at Llanfair, have been brilliant in trying to keep us trading but it is likely that much of the stock can’t be salvaged and we shall have to start afresh. It’s very frustrating and obviously affects the business significantly.

“Luckily the shop is split into two and the back area which houses our card shop is less affected – we are hoping to continue to keep this open for our customers during the clean-up operation.”

Police are appealing for information and currently viewing CCTV footage. Two fire extinguishers have been retrieved. If you have any information, contact the police on 101.
