Wrangle over Welshpool super pub

01/07/2011 @ 05:34

Welshpool is still no nearer to welcoming its first national pub chain after mywelshpool can reveal that Marston’s is at odds with Powys County Council over its application.

A planning insider has informed us that the pub chain submitted its proposals five months ago and, despite Welshpool Town Council fully supporting the plan, the county planners need more convincing.

The stumbling block appears to be the company’s insistence to stick with the design image it has for its hundreds of pubs located throughout the UK. But it is an appearance that has not satisfied Powys.

“There is a wrangle at the moment which has not been resolved as there has not been much give on either side so far,” said our insider.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: "Plans for the erection of a public house / restaurant together with new access road, car parking and associated works at the former Smithfield site in Welshpool have been submitted by Marston’s Inns & Taverns.

“There are a number issues relating to highways, design and layout of the development which are currently outstanding.  We are in consultation with Marston’s agent, J Ross Development Ltd, in an attempt to resolve these outstanding issues.”

The pub, earmarked for old Smithfield land opposite Tesco (right), is expected to create up to 26 jobs once it eventually opens.
