Guilsfield play park set for overhaul

Guilsfield’s popular play park is set for a complete overhaul after the community council pledged £25,000 from its reserves towards creating “something special” for the village’s youngsters.

At January’s monthly meeting, a working group will report back to council on plans for the new look facility which will replace the ageing equipment, originally installed in 1995, next to the primary school.

A recent inspection condemned one of the slides, and Guilsfield Community Council Chairman, Ian Harrison, said that it was now a matter of urgency to bring the project to fruition.

“Following a number of safety and budget reviews and a Powys Council inspection last year the Community Council decided to invest in new play equipment and made £25,000 available from reserves,” said Cllr Harrison, who explained that the working group was also tasked with sourcing more grant funding to invest in the facility.

We have consulted with the children at Guilsfield Primary School with local children offering many creative ideas to improve the play area for all age groups. Readers of Guilsfield Spotlight and local social media platforms have also been asked for their views.”

With the inspection report showing that the current equipment was now obsolete and did not meet current safety standards, Cllr Harrison said that he hopes to see the new facility in place this summer, but warned of potential obstacles ahead.

“We don’t have a timetable yet. The key driver is the school consultation which should be almost finished. Once we have that we can build a user requirements spec and apply for grant funding. The sub committee is due to feedback at our meeting on January 17, to which residents are encouraged to join by Zoom.

“I am also told that play equipment installers are inundated with orders at the moment, so lead times are long. But we are determined to be done either before the summer or during the autumn, latest.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our village to offer an exciting and challenging play area in a modern and safe environment to our youngsters during 2022.”
