Toilet block won’t be converted

18/03/2022 @ 09:29

Any plans by Welshpool Town Council for alternative use of the Berriew Street Car Park toilets have been scuppered by Powys County Council.

The Town Council took on the Berriew Street toilets block as an asset transfer from Powys County Council but closed the doors over two years ago – blaming the rising costs of keeping the conveniences open.

The Council had been looking at finding alternative uses for the toilet block but Town Clerk, Anne Wilson, told a meeting of the Services & Property Committee that Powys County Council had made it clear that under the transfer agreement the building must remain as toilets if it is to reopen.

Councillors have discussed planning to reopen the toilets in 2023 and discussions will take when following the May 5 elections.

Powys County Council will also be asked to fence off “dangerous” areas outside the building.
