Clamp down on ‘singles’ tax dodgers

22/07/2011 @ 04:32

Homeowners in the Welshpool area falsely claiming for single occupancy have been given until August 1 to come clean.

Powys County Council has launched a clamp down on homeowners who claim for 25% single person discount on their council tax despite sharing their property with a partner, friend(s) or family.

The swindle is believed to be costing the council tens of thousands of pounds, prompting the amnesty to allow homeowners to come forward and balance the books.

Cllr Tony Thomas, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “We have joined up with other councils in north and Mid Wales to carry out a review of cases where a 25% single person discount has been awarded for council tax purposes.  Councils are required to ensure that discounts are awarded properly.

“The review will help us confirm that these discounts are being accurately claimed and to identify people who are claiming the single persons discount on their council tax when they are not entitled to it.  The review also provides ‘fairness for all’ residents – helping to ensure those who are already paying the correct level of council tax are not subsidising those who are claiming when they should not be.

“We realise that the vast majority of people claiming discount are genuinely entitled to receive it and they have absolutely nothing to fear as they will continue to receive this discount.  But we have an obligation to ensure that we receive all the money that is due so we can deliver the levels of services our residents expect.”

In a letter to current single property claimers, homeowners are told to confirm their status by August 1 before random checks are made on properties by a third-party agency.
