“Embarrassing” sign riles Welsh speakers

Welsh speakers were not impressed when highways signs put in place by a water company displayed a dreadful translation.

Engineers from Hafren Dyfrdwy were on site near Shade Oak fixing leaky with temporary traffic lights put in place to manage traffic flow.

But eagle eyed Mywelshpool readers were left shaking their heads in disbelief at the quality of the Welsh translation (pictured).

One told us: “My daughter, mum and I spotted the sign which has the Welsh part written totally incorrectly.

“It should be highlighted that when translating from English to Welsh it really isn’t difficult to get it right in this day and age!

“It’s embarrassing that this actually translates as ‘when Welsh red light stand’. Welsh is a lot of people’s first language in this area and we feel it’s important to get it right!”
A spokesman for the water company said: “We apologise for any offence or confusion caused by the mistake that was made with this road sign – it was unintentional. We’re working with our supply chain to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
