Revamped school field will be open for public use

There was a welcome surprise announcement last night that a school pitch is set to be revamped and will be open for community use with floodlights.

There have been problems with the playing surface attached to the new Welshpool Church in Wales School since it opened on Salop Road last year, and parents were becoming frustrated at its lack of use.

But the school revealed good news that a grant has been secured to transform the pitches with floodlights also to be installed, which would then be made available to clubs out of school hours.

“The school has been awarded a substantial grant by Sports Wales to transform the rear field that has been unusable since moving to the site into a state-of-the-art pitch,” the school announced.

“Phase one started last week. The grass will be removed before drainage is installed and new turf re-laid.

“Included in the grant funding is the cost of flood lighting to allow the pitch to be used out of hours by local sports clubs. The school applied for a grant so that the community can get full use of a purpose-built sports field.”

The announcement will be welcomed by sports clubs who have seen their options become limited since the school was built on the former Salop Road playing fields. However, work also started last month on converting fields close to the rugby pitch into usable playing surfaces.
