Welshpool Cricket Club are liaising with police after vandals caused damage to thousands of pounds worth of sports equipment that was only purchased this year.

The club was told by an eye witness that up to five youngsters were seen jumping on the covers that were bought for over £2,000 to ensure the wicket remains in playable condition throughout the summer.

They were badly damaged and disheartened club officials will be left with the bill to repair.

“It is so frustrating because we do what we can to provide a sport for the youngsters in the town and then stuff like this happens,” a spokesperson told us.

The area has been blighted by vandals in recent years with the grandstands at both Waterloo Rovers and Welshpool Town targeted, not to mention the rugby pitch being left unplayable after vandals stole a tractor and then smashed its windows in the middle of the playing surface.
