Town planners have objected to the conversion of a shop into a one-bedroom flat, saying it would have set a dangerous precedent for the struggling town centre.
Welshpool Town Council’s planning committee received an application to convert 11 Hall Street into a dwelling after the business that formerly occupied it closed down.
But a spokesperson for the planners said: “The Committee objects to this application. The property is in the central zone where shopping frontages should be retained. A residential use in this location will set a precedent with regard to other secondary shops being lost. Properties of this type are normally the only ones which smaller business can afford.”
