Be warned: Rogue tarmac gangs are back

Residents in the Welshpool area are being targeted by rogue gangs offering to tarmac driveways or do the gardens, the Powys Community Safety Partnership has warned.

The partnership has issued the warning to householders not to use the gangs as they charge extortionate amounts of money for work for substandard work, and can even commit thefts using distraction tactics.

Cllr Les Davies, Chairman of the Powys Community Safety Partnership (CSP), said: “Some residents are tempted by offers of cheap work from these people but in our experience the work is extremely poor which often needs re-doing at further cost to the resident.

“Anyone thinking of having any work carried out should consider all aspects very carefully and ensure that the prices quoted are fair and reasonable, including the total price payable on completion of work. Also get a number of quotes before committing to any work.

“Doorstep sellers offering gardening or tarmacing services seem to offer quick solutions to your needs but can cause a lot of grief. So if you’re ever in doubt, keep them out.”

The partnership’s Doorstep Crime Forum, which includes Powys County Council and Dyfed Powys Police, tackles rogue trading and doorstep crime in Powys in the county.

Inspector Brian Jones of Dyfed Powys Police, said: “It is important that householders never allow anybody access to their homes or premises without first checking and verifying identification. If residents see traders they are not happy with or who are acting suspiciously then they should obtain a vehicle description and index and report it to our 101 telephone line.”

The partnership advises householders to always get details in writing including:

- the names and address of the persons concerned
- total price payable
- any guarantees or warranties
- note the registration number of any vehicles used or seen
- cancellation rights
