Welshpool set for hourly trains

22/09/2011 @ 03:27

Welshpool is set to be serviced by an hourly train service after AM Russell George confirmed talks are underway with operator Arriva.

The news broke from the Welsh Assembly’s opening session after the summer recess when Mr George raised concerns about the lack of rains which resulted in overcrowded carriages on the Shrewsbury-Aberystwyth line.

“The news that investment in the line remains a key part of the Government’s National Transport Plan is long overdue,” said Mr George: “The Welsh Government is in discussions with Arriva Trains Wales regarding the time tabling of new train services.

“The improvement of the Cambrian Line is an extremely important aspect in delivering economic growth in Mid Wales. Passenger and business groups have been waiting on the Government to fulfil its part of the bargain and bring forward the revenue funding to complete the enhancement project.”

Mr George said that he has received complaints of a reduction in carriages on the route recently and urged Arriva to ease overcrowding by increasing carriage numbers.

Meanwhile, County Councillor Frank Torrens, welcomed the news on the hourly service and said: "This is something that we have been lobbying on for some time now and I am pleased that the Welsh Government is taking this forward. However, to have these services time tabled for the early spring, we need decisions to be made as soon as possible.”
