‘Government forced through police reforms’

28/09/2011 @ 04:09

Local police have accused Westminster of “forcing through” reforms which they say have been opposed by the Welsh Assembly, Welsh Local Government Association and the House of Lords.

In November 2012, communities throughout Wales and England will have the opportunity to vote for their Police and Crime Commissioner, replacing the Police Authorities.

But Vice Chair of Dyfed Powys Police Authority, Councillor Gwyn Hopkins, said: “There has been a lot of debate in recent months about directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners and the Westminster Government’s controversial proposals have been firmly opposed by the Welsh Government, the Welsh Local Government Association and the House of Lords. However, Central Government has ignored this strong opposition and forced its proposals through the House of Commons.

“Whilst concerns remain unchanged, Dyfed Powys Police Authority will not only continue in its duties to ensure an efficient and effective policing service for its communities, it will also work tirelessly to ensure that the transition to Police Commissioners is as smooth and successful as possible”.

The vote to elect Police and Crime Commissioners will take place on November 15, 2012.
