Making local countryside more accessible

28/09/2011 @ 04:12

The Powys countryside will be made more accessible to wheelchair users thanks to a new project.

Powys County Council is working with the charity 'Disabled Holiday Information' to produce publications to promote accessible countryside trails, activities and accommodation in the county.

The bilingual leaflets will have large input from disabled volunteers who will help assess the suitability of trails, sites and accommodations.

Leading the project from Powys County Council is Nina Davies from the Countryside Services department. She explains: "We are very enthusiastic about this project, particularly working in partnership with the charity and local people. The leaflets will be published next Easter and information will also be available on the websites of Powys County Council and Disabled Holidays."

Cllr Wynne Jones, Powys County Council's Cabinet Member for Countryside Services, said: "Powys is famous for it's beautiful countryside and we hope these leaflets will become an excellent resource to make the local countryside more accessible for everyone, especially for those with disabiities."
