An initiative has been launched in Powys to encourage more people to become sporting volunteers.
Active Leaders has been introduced by Powys County Council to provide training and support for future sports volunteers.
The initiative recognises the importance of volunteers in running local sports clubs and aims to encourage a new generation of sports leaders.
Wendy Langford, Active Young People Co-ordinator at Powys County Council, explains: "Without the dedication and support of volunteers, many community sports groups simply wouldn't exist. This new scheme aims to encourage more adults to get involved in sports volunteering by providing support and training to get them on their way."
First to sign-up to the initiative are a group of students from Coleg Powys. They got the programme underway at a workshop at Maldwyn Leisure Centre where they received a three-hour basic coaching workshop. As part of the programme, they will also receive a booklet outlining roles, responsibilities, guidelines and further opportunities. Incentives such as a sports whistle, clothing are available for milestones of volunteering hours completed after the course.
If you are interested in taking part in the Active Leaders programme or becoming a volunteer or coach contact Katie Hamer on 01686 627971.
