Teenager killed in Spanish moped crash

13/10/2011 @ 04:32

A former Guilsfield Primary and Welshpool High School pupil has been killed after being knocked off his moped in northern Spain.

Alex Charlesworth, 16, is believed to have died at the scene of the accident close to his adopted home of Olot, northern Spain, where he moved to in 2006 with parents David and Pilar.

The youngster had become a national swimming star and his death was met by shock from hundreds of friends and fans who joined a Facebook page set up in his memory. He was being touted as a future Olympian having achieved gold in the national championships earlier this summer (pictured below in centre).

Rumours of a youngster’s death began circulating amongst High School pupils earlier this week and it has now been confirmed that Alex died on October 5. He was buried two days later.

The tribute page ‘Eres, ets i seràs sempre el nostre Àlex Charlesworth’ which translated means ‘You were, are, and always will be our Alex Charlesworth’ has attracted nearly 1,500 members with most of the tributes in Spanish.

A minute’s silence was held on Monday at the annual awards ceremony for the Catalan Swimming Champions as a mark of respect.
