Aspiring young ‘Olympians’ have been competing in one of the first competitions of the Powys Games.
under 16 hockey team has triumphed over seven other secondary schools to win the South Powys tournament, beating Christ College Brecon 1-0.
Welshpool High School beat Caereinion High School in the Under 16 hockey event and will now face Crickhowell High School who beat Christ College Brecon. The winner will represent Powys in the Welsh Schools under 16 tournament.
The Powys Games is being organised by Powys County Council to create a legacy for the London 2012 Olympics. The council is encouraging more children and young people to take part in competitive sports and to inspire a generation of sports lovers and hopefully even some future Powys Olympians.
The idea is to encourage school teams to compete for medals in 11 Olympic sports and Paralympic events. Banners and flags branded with the local Games’ mascot, Rhos, will bring colour and excitement to events and pupils can follow their school’s progress online.
Primary schools will have an opportunity to join in the sporting fun too as mini-Olympic festivals are planned throughout Powys next year.
An X Games festival is also being organised for young people who prefer extreme sports including mountain biking and skateboarding.
