A Welshpool company has picked up a major award for its champion bangers just in time to celebrate British Sausage Week which starts on Monday.

The UK Foodhall added another accolade to their roll of honour when the nationwide school food supplier triumphed at the dedicated competition for the catering industry – The BPEX Foodservice Sausage of the Year 2011.

Their ‘Healthier Option Schools Sausage’ was awarded gold and also achieved third place in the best innovative pork sausage category. The awards were handed out at a ceremony at London’s prestigious Butchers Hall.

From more than 280 sausage entries just 15 were selected by expert industry judges for the top accolades.

As well as success with the ‘Healthier Option Schools Sausage’, Karen McQuade (pictured) was delighted that their ‘Mighty Mini Pork Sausage’ also achieved a gold award.

“To have a ‘healthier sausage’ in a national final next to a range or gourmet varieties is quite wonderful,” she said. “Our sausages are affordable but we don’t compromise on the quality of ingredients used or the care taken to produce them. We supply over 200,000 sausages to 13,000 schools nationwide and what makes all the difference is that they know they are getting award winning products.”

The annual BPEX competition rewards excellence and innovation in sausages produced using quality assured pork for the catering industry.

Ms McQuade, who gave up a highly paid job and sold her home and car to set up the Welshpool based business, is a previous winner of the HSBC’s Start-Up Stars competition.
