One-way review finally gets in gear

The long-awaited review into Welshpool’s controversial one-way system has finally been launched following a two-month delay due to personnel changes at Powys County Council.

Residents and motorists breathed a collective sigh of relief this summer when it was confirmed a full review would be carried out into the much maligned road system that was launched in February.

That review was due to be launched by senior county councillor David Jones in September but he has revealed this weekend that it was put on the backburner due to internal changes within Powys County Council. Cllr Jones says it has now been launched and has called for a little more patience.

“I have been told that the officers who took the lead on Welshpool’s one-way have left the Council,” said Cllr Jones. “It has taken until now to get people to read up and master what happened and why. The panel had its first meeting on Friday. We walked the system and looked at the main trouble spots. We also agreed to do spot surveys of users in Welshpool, both pedestrian and motorists. I hope that now we have been able to start we can make better progress.

Cllr Jones added that there was no deadline to conclude his investigation but says the process will enjoy some momentum now it is underway.
