A fuel thief was rumbled when an alarm triggered by the tank being raided forced the offender to flee empty handed, leaving their gear behind.
A pipe and pump with a 12-volt battery was attached to the tank located in a back garden in Llanrhaedr Ym Mochnant.
But the cap to the tank triggered an alarm when it was opened, forcing the hasty retreat.
“This was a pretty professional attempt,” said Sergeant Kelvin Briggs. “The person knew what to do and has gone equipped to steal the fuel in this tank. Luckily on this occasion the homeowner has had the good foresight to take precautions against such a thing happening and has frightened the would-be offender off.
“I’d advise all homeowners with fuel tanks to take sensible precautions to prevent being a victim of crime.”
