Montgomeryshire is warming itself up after two of the coldest nights of the winter so far which caused problems for motorists and pedestrians across Mid Wales.
Light rain and snow on Friday evening were followed by freezing temperatures turning many B roads and car parks into ice rinks, but the council ensured the main arteries remained open with extensive gritting on both Friday and Saturday nights.
But as our exclusive picture shows, the council’s gritters endured treacherous early morning conditions with this one losing its grip on the road parallel to the church in Llanfair Caereinion and rolling into the graveyard. It took 20 metres of hedgerow and a telegraph pole with it.
“I didn’t actually see it happen but I think it just lost control on the ice and it rolled down into the graveyard and took the telegraph pole out as well!” said Baz Lloyd who took the photo. “The road was closed all morning so they could pull it back onto the road.”
Sunshine is promised today but the temperatures are expected to drop again well into the week.
