Arrest over McNamee hit and run

Police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal hit and run road collision which claimed the life of former Welshpool man Dale McNamee (pictured).

West Mercia Police say they made the arrest on Saturday but stressed the investigation into the father-of-three's death is continuing and renewed their appeal for public help in tracing the driver of the vehicle which struck Mr McNamee in the early hours of November 26.

He died while walking along the A458 between Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth at around 4.20am. It is thought he may have been lying in the road, either fully in the carriageway or partly on the verge, when hit by a passing vehicle travelling towards Bridgnorth at Venus Bank, near Cound.

Mr McNamee was left dead at the scene. The vehicle - thought to be a white box-type van - failed to stop.

The arrest follows an appeal by Mr McNamee's father Clive, who made a plea for information and for the driver to contact police, during a press conference at Shrewsbury police station on Friday. His appeal was reinforced by senior detectives.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jamieson said today: “I can confirm a man has been arrested in connection with the incident. He has been released on police bail while our inquiries continue.

“This investigation is still very much ongoing and I stress again the importance that anyone with information which might help our inquiries, especially in identifying the driver of the vehicle, should not hesitate to contact Shrewsbury CID on the non emergency 101 number.

“Information can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111.”
