Drink, drive warning as party season kicks-off

Revellers hitting the works parties and nights out in the coming days are being warned not to drink and drive as police launch a Christmas clampdown.

Last December, 139 drunk drivers were prosecuted in Powys as a result of roadside checks, and Powys County Council’s Road Safety Unit is warning that the safest option is not to drive at all if booze is on the agenda.

While the legal limit is 35 micrograms per 100ml of breath, the Unit says it is virtually impossible to be able to judge how much you can safely drink and still be under the limit.

Following the launch of its Christmas Anti Drink-Drive campaign, the Road Safety Unit is also reminding festive partygoers about driving anywhere the morning after the night before, stating that every unit of alcohol consumed takes the liver one hour to process.

As a guide, it claims that if an average person drank five standard 175ml glasses of wine but stopped before midnight, it would still take until 11.30am the following day for the body to be clear of alcohol. At five large 250ml glasses, this increases to 4.30pm.
