Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.
 
OTMS (25) FAT CATTLE (23)
Welshpool livestock sales report on an excellent trade of OTM cows and Prime cattle to open the 2012 trading year.
24 OTM cattle were forward and were met with a very strong trade averaging 118.76ppkg. Top price of the day was £1007.40 per head from T H Davies & Sons Clegyrddwr, with other cows at £1002.84, £986.29 and £976.22 per head. T H Davies & Sons Clegyrddwr receives the Briarwood Products prize of £25 for the highest price over 48 months cow sold on the day. Seven buyers were presented around the ring and more cows are requested each week to meet the very strong demand.
The favourable entry of 23 fat cattle to open the New Year trading was met with an excellent trade. Nine out of the 13 cattle exceeded 200ppkg and topped at 229ppkg on two occasions from J M Rowlands Dolwen Llanidloes. J M Rowlands Dolwen receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price beast sold on the day. An entry of 4457 prime lambs, selling to an excellent average of 206ppkg.   
Super Lights (up to 25.4kg) (108) to 192ppkg from W I Ellis Talwrn. Others to 191ppkg from S Beamond Dolhafren. Average of 189ppkg.
Lights (25.5kg to 32kg) (271) to 216ppkg from R G K Hodnett Willey. Others to 214ppkg from D L G Price & Co Bryncoch. Average of 204ppkg.
Standards (32.1kg to 39kg) (848) to 228ppkg from W G Jones Cwmduggan. Others to 222ppkg from D & G Andrew Lower Brynygroes. Average of 207ppkg.
Mediums (39.1kg to 45.5kg) (2177) to 231ppkg from ME & MB Roberts Woodleasowes. Others to 224ppkg from C D Jones Bedol. Average of 205ppkg.
Heavies (45.1kg to 52kg) (745) to 206ppkg from I & J Evans Llwynhywel. Others to 203ppkg from D R Owen & Sons Sandilands. Average of 189ppkg.  
Over Weights (over 52kg) (261) to 186ppkg from FG & G Mountford Middle Heldre. Other to 182ppkg from I & J Evans Llwynhywel. Average of 173ppkg.

CULL EWE (1766)
An entry of 1766 cull sheep sold to a very good average of £66.89 per head for the ewes and £78.33 for the rams. Cull ewes topped the sale at £139 per head from TD & MJ Orrells & Son Middle Llegodig. Other ewes achieved £128 (x2), £116 and £110. Cull rams topped at £128 per head from R H Powell Middle Cochran. Other rams made £122, £114 and £111. Weekly sale of Cull sheep every Monday to immediately follow the sale of Fat lambs at approximately 12 noon.
 
STORE LAMBS
A reduced entry of 458 lambs entered the market this week selling to a very pleasing average of £71.62. Texelx theave lambs from TL & OA Bennett Dolgead Farm realised £79.20 while Texelx mixed and clean lambs from E Lowden Priddbwll Mawr achieved £81.80. Wether lambs from Evans & Thomas Gwaen Tre Beddau sold to £77 with texel tup lambs selling to £80. Overall a strong trade with a number of buyers showing a strong interest in store lambs. More lambs required next week, sale to commence at 10.30am. Sale of In lamb ewe are to commence on the 16th January 2012 following the sale of store lambs. If you would like to sell In Lamb ewes please contact the market office so they can be advertised in the local press.
 
DAIRY COWS
An entry of 8 heifers were forward for the first sale of 2012 with trade equally as good as the end of last year with only one lot under £1600. M T Jones The Elms Farm Oswestry sold to a top price of £2020 for a heifer giving 6 galloons per day. From the same home where two other heifers which made £1950 and £1630. A Sandy Valley Bolton daughter from T G Phillips & Co Burgedin sold for £1900. From Messers Goolden Cilbach Meifod was a heifer giving 27kg which made £2020. R R Corfield & Co Bronynant made £1820 for a Velvet Daughter. WA & EM Morris Maestanyglwyden sold a British Friesian heifer for £1600. A breakdown of all prices achieved where as follows: £2000+ 2 lots, £1800 - £2000 3 lots, £1600 - £1800 2 lots, Less than £1600 1 lot. Entries now invited for the next Sale of Dairy Cows and Heifers which will take place on Monday 16th January 2012.
