A 14-year old BMX cyclist is said to be in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car on the Penrhos junction between Four Crosses and Arddleen on the A483.

The accident, which happened at 4.40pm yesterday (Thursday), led to the road being closed for six hours and massive diversions put in place.

“We had a call that there had been a road traffic collision between a black Volkswagen Polo car and a BMX pushbike being ridden by a 14-year old boy,” said Sergeant Sean Westlake of the Mid Wales Roads Policing Unit. “The teenager was taken first to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and later transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital. His condition is said to be critical.

“I would ask any member of the public who may have witnessed the accident or has any information relevant to it to please contact police at Newtown Police Station on 101.”

After we initially reported the accident and warned motorists to avoid the area last night, residents of Four Crosses shared their anger over the speeds of motorists using the village’s new by-pass.

One posted on our Facebook wall: “It’s even worse now with the new road. Motorists see it as a race track. I have taken my life into my own hands trying to cross the road at the pelican, because half the time the drivers aren’t even looking for the traffic lights, they are just trying not to slow down too much to go over the roundabout. Horrendous.”
