Top notch music on Thursday

10/01/2012 @ 03:17

Welshpool Music Club launches its 2012 concerts on Thursday with a performance from Tempest, which is made up from three of Britain’s most talented flautists.

The award-winning musicians - Helen Wilson, Holly Melia and Sarah Bennett – form an exciting flute trio founded at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, despite all originating from Yorkshire.

The trio covers a wide spectrum of music including their own works and arrangements and won the RNCM Woodwind Chamber Music Competition and Trevor Wye Prize 2011 despite only playing together for a few months. They were also semi-finalists in the Royal Overseas League International Competition and have been shortlisted for the prestigious Park Lane Group concert series in London.

In May 2011, the trio won the Nonclassical "Battle of the Bands" competition resulting in a future album release on the Nonclassical records label.

As individuals, all three are established solo, ensemble and orchestral musicians and in 2006 and 2008 members were woodwind finalists and semi-finalists in the BBC Young Musician of the Year.

Tempest is an innovative group with experience in all genres of music from jazz (including performances at Ronnie Scott's jazz club), to co-creating music with famous DJ Gareth Emery, and to more traditional classical, early and contemporary music.

So expect the unexpected when Tempest perform at Welshpool Methodist Church (7.30pm) on Thursday.  Tempest appears by kind permission of the RNCM

Admission is £7 for adults and £2 for students.  Further information contact Joan or Roy on 01938 554 840.
