Unbelievable Jeff!

Welshpool Town is about to become one of the best known amateur football clubs in the country following an incredible series of events.

The club, which is one of Wales’ oldest at 133 years old, is set to feature on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday on January 21 with a, yet, unnamed ex-professional expected to pull on the white shirt for the showpiece fixture.

Players and committee members received the news last night (Monday) in a hastily arranged meeting after manager Dave Jones was contacted by the satellite broadcaster which has followed the club’s fortunes since a 10-1 Boxing Day drubbing at the hands of town rivals Waterloo Rovers.

“It may sound bizarre, but that defeat could turn out to be the best thing to happen to the club in a long time,” said Jones, who emailed Sky to highlight the club’s ailing fortunes. That email was then read out in its entirety by Jeff Stelling (pictured) to millions of football fans with the veteran broadcaster declaring: “Well said Dave, and that won’t be the last time you hear about Welshpool Town on Soccer Saturday!”

And true to his word, Jones has been contacted by Sky Sports who will send a full TV crew to cover the match with Rhayader on the same day that the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea are in Premier League action. They have also promised a ‘star’ signing to help out.

“It’s a massive boost to all involved with the club because it has been a really hard season just trying to survive,” said Jones, who took over with Neil Breeze just minutes before the club was due to fold in August.

“I am really pleased for the small committee who have kept the club going and of course the players who had the courage to join Welshpool Town despite the club being in dire straights. It will be a boost as well for the Spar Mid Wales League and the town generally which will enjoy major national publicity so we encourage everyone to come down and enjoy the occasion.

“Hopefully the coverage from Sky Sports will help Welshpool Town survive both this season and beyond.”

The match against Rhayader will kick off at Maesydre at 2pm on Saturday, January 21.
