One of Welshpool’s 'forgotten' streets is set for a spruce-up as part of a multi-million pound regeneration programme.
New Street has been earmarked for development under the Severn Valley Environmental Enhancement Scheme and with funding from Powys County Council, the European Regional Development Fund and the Wales Government, the project aims to improve access between the central shopping and market areas and the Berriew Street car park.
Cllr Wynne Jones, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Within Welshpool town centre the funding is being made available to increase its attractiveness to businesses, residents and tourists. Work will include enhancements to footway surfaces, signs and street furniture.”
Cllr Jones explained that the county council and its partners wanted to hear the views of the public on the proposals and have arranged a ‘drop-in’ session at the town’s Evangelical Church, New Street, on Tuesday, January 31, between 4-7pm.
“Plans for New Street will be on display during the event to be discussed with council officers and response forms will be made available for feedback,” he added.
The proposed work includes:
- Upgrading the current footway and road surface
- Improving the pedestrian access from Berriew Street car park to Broad Street
- Bilingual signage showing clearly the route and adequate signage at each end explaining the route
- Create appropriate drop kerbs for easier access
