Welshpool set for new flood defences

20/02/2012 @ 04:12

Welshpool has been a town under siege in recent winters, but a big investment has been secured in a bid to bolster the town’s defences.

Despite being one of the driest winters for 40 years, Welshpool was again inaccessible from several directions following November downfalls (picture right from the Air Ambulance), following on from previous years which have resulted in the town being virtually cut off.

But an emergency fund of £4.9million has been approved by the Welsh Government to speed up flood and coastal defence schemes around Wales with Welshpool topping the list of six towns on red alert.

The money will enable works planned for future years within the Government's programme to be brought forward.

Environment Minister John Griffiths said: “One in six properties across Wales is at risk of flooding. While we cannot stop or prevent flooding or erosion, we can take steps to manage the risks and the consequences of it.

“Our programme of work supports a wide range of schemes to address flooding from rivers, watercourses, the sea and also coastal erosion risks. In each case we combine construction works with awareness-raising activities within the local community to improve the resilience of properties in the areas affected.”
