Welshpool among Britain’s slowest broadband

24/02/2012 @ 11:55

Welshpool has one of the slowest broadband speeds for a town in Britain, but one company has launched a fast broadband project in neighbouring Guilsfield which could be expanded.

A survey carried out by price comparison service uSwitch.com showed that Welshpool’s average speed was 3.668 mbp/s, just above the slowest recorded in Britain which was in Hereford at 3.196 mbp/s.

But these speeds are lightning quick compared to those endured by villages surrounding the town who continue to operate in the cyber dark ages.

However, help is at hand and one company says it can provide residents of Guilsfield and Crew Green the opportunity to tap into speeds of up to 20mbp/s, with grant support from the Welsh Government’s Broadband Support Scheme

Airband Community Internet Ltd held village meetings and carried out a substantial marketing campaign before signing up villagers to faster broadband speeds, but time is running out for residents to register for grant assistance.

“A resident with speeds of less than 2 mbps qualifies for a grant,” said the initiative’s Jon Downes. “We then help them step by step through the application process. All of our applicants have secured the maximum grant to date.

“The customer pays the monthly amount (£22 in the densely housed areas) and the balance of the installation which is £85.01. The Welsh Government pays the rest but the deadline for assistance is near.”

To see if you qualify, visit www.airband.co/powys to test your speed and submit your details via the online form. Remember, it is just for residents of Guilsfield and Crew Green at present.
