Dyfed Powys Police Authority has announced the retirement of its Chief Constable Ian Arundale this summer.

Mrs Delyth Humfryes, MBE Chair of the Dyfed Powys Police Authority said: “Our current Chief Constable, Mr Ian Arundale QPM, following 32 years of service, has indicated his intention to retire in June 2012. Mr Arundale is an extremely able individual who has ensured that despite the financial and change challenges we face as an organisation, Dyfed Powys Police continues to reduce crime and achieve some of the highest crime detection rates in England and Wales, making it one of the best performing forces in the UK.

“Stability and continuity in the Force’s leadership is critical to ensuring that the organisation continues to deliver for the communities of the Dyfed Powys area and the Police Authority is currently examining options to explore this. On behalf of Members of the Police Authority, I would like to wish Ian the very best for the future.”

Chief Constable Arundale added: “The last four years have probably been the most challenging in the history of Dyfed Powys Police. During this time, the force has seen significant changes to our structures and the implementation of new approaches to how we deliver our services.

“Performance has been outstanding, despite the huge disruption caused by the need to strip £13 Million out of our budget. There have also been significant operational successes, perhaps most notably the conviction of Wales’s most notorious serial killer John William Cooper.

“I am confident that all the foundations, structures, people and processes are now in place to face the challenges that will come during the four year tenure of the first Policing and Crime Commissioner. Continuity of leadership will be vital during this period and because of this and other considerations I have decided that the time is now right to allow a new Chief Constable to be appointed to lead the Force through the next set of challenges.

“The last four years have been the most challenging and rewarding of my career and the loyalty and commitment of everyone working to serve the communities of Dyfed and Powys is something I will always remember with great pride.”

Further information will be available in due course from the Police authority outlining the arrangements to appoint a new Chief Constable for Dyfed Powys Police.
