Youth Theatre’s new production

20/03/2012 @ 11:55

Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre is performing Aristophanes’ The Clouds at Theatr Clera, Welshpool High School, at 7pm on March 30 and 31, and tickets are on sale now.

Aristophanes’ original work was set in Athens 423BC, and the theme is the old way of thinking versus the new. The Youth Theatre has taken the original play and transposed it to more recent times - the gangster era where Strepsiades, the patriarch, is angry and frustrated at the debts his son has incurred through his love of gambling and horses.

He wants to enrol him into a think tank run by Socrates, so that he can learn the slippery art of talking his way out of problems and debts. But the son refuses to go and in the end, Strepsiades enrols himself into the think tank, hoping to learn how to confuse and intimidate his creditors, with tragic results.

Described as ‘a masterly piece of satire, drawing the contemporary audience’s attention to the possibility that radical thinking can undermine traditional values and so ruin society’, Aristophanes’ The Clouds contains thoughts, comments and humour that are still universally appealing.

Admission prices are Adults £6, Concessions £4, Family Ticket (2 of each) £15 and can be reserved by calling Penny Jones on 01938 554899 or mytheatre@fsmail.net.
