Two main arteries into Welshpool were cut off last night after a car crash in Buttington followed another serious smash at Pool Quay.
Motorists using the roads to Oswestry and Shrewsbury faced huge diversions as emergency services coped admirably with the chaos despite being stretched to the limit.
There were reports that two air ambulances were used for the smash at Pool Quay, which closed the road shortly after 4.30pm, with two women cut free and flown to hospital with serious injuries after their car was in collision with a HGV and a 4x4. The road only re-opened at 8.31am today.
As traffic was diverted through Buttington instead, another road accident was soon reported later in the evening, closing that road too as emergency crews responded.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, our eyes on the road, Steve Wright from Wright’s Taxi, reported in his early hours end-of-shift road report that one of his mini buses suffered a head-on collision with a car!
“What a day/night!” he started his briefing with and that seemed to sum up perfectly a very tough night.
