Russell Cadwallader has been appointed as the new headteacher of Welshpool’s Maesydre School, and will start work after Easter.
Mr. Cadwallader, a well known local sporting figure as manager of Guilsfield Football Club, will join the school from his post as head of Newtown’s Maesyrhandir School and comes with an impressive teaching pedigree having previously run Castle Caereinion Primary School.
The appointment was confirmed by Powys County Council, and comes after the school was placed under ‘special measures’ by Estyn following a disappointing inspector’s report last year.
Former head teacher Suzanne Foster left her post just before Christmas, having been suspended in October, and Mr. Cadwallader’s appointment comes at a time when parents and teaching staff have pulled together admirably to repair the school’s reputation.
Mr Derek Simms, chair of governors, said: “We would like to wish Mr Cadwallader every success in his challenging new role. We are confident that under his guidance we will complete an action plan that we have in place to meet all the Estyn guidelines.”
Maesydre schools nearly 200 pupils.
