Funding shortfall hits big event

23/03/2012 @ 03:50

Organisers of this weekend’s Bulldog International Rally have been forced to pull the plug on tonight’s competitive action following a financial shortfall caused by a drop in entries.

However, the town centre Ceremonial Start will still take place from 5pm (Friday).

The announcement comes after the entry book closed midweek and revealed 30 fewer teams than last year, hitting the event budget by a whopping £16,500.

The original plan was for the Mayor to flag off the International cars which would then head off for two night stages in the Dyfnant Forest, which have now been canned. The cancellation will have no effect on the Bulldog Challenge, Bulldog Historic or Welsh National Championship-qualifying event – all of which run wholly tomorrow (Saturday).

Rally manager Kevin Witton told maxrally.com: “We have 30 fewer paid entries compared with this time last year. That represents a shortfall to the Wolverhampton and South Staffs Car Club – run by unpaid volunteers – of £16,500. We cannot, and will not, cut corners to save money which could jeopardise the safe running of the five events which make up The Bulldog Rally. So, by cancelling these two stages the club can save on its forestry charges and set-up costs and reduce the potential loss by £10,000.

“All Saturday’s special stages are scheduled to run, including the ninth and final spectator stage in Dyfnant East and provide the full quota of stage miles for the national and historic rally – and 80 miles of competitive driving for those in the international. Despite Friday’s changes, everyone can look forward to the prospect of driving over some of the finest quality Forestry Commission gravel roads in Wales.”

Tonight’s entertainment includes an opportunity for fans to take photographs and grab autographs from the top drivers in the Spar Car Park.
