Council defers one-way change support

Welshpool Town Council will not be supporting local businesses’ call for changes to the controversial one-way system, for now at least.

The town’s Business Forum has called on the council to back a proposal for Brook Street and Union Street to be adopted as a trunk road and returned to two-way. The Forum also wanted the council to call for a new link road from the Railway Station roundabout through Church Street Car Park.

But it has voted to defer the matter until after next month’s elections and deal with the proposal as part of the Town Centre Plan Review.

“The members felt it was inappropriate to discuss the proposal at this time,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “The newly elected council will now look at this request. We are discussing going out to consultation on the impact of the new road system in June and July anyway. This will involve the business community, residents and surrounding villages,” he said.

“There were only nine businesses represented at the forum meeting and it is important to record the views of everyone.”

Powys Councillor David Jones, who is heading a council review panel into the impact of the one-way system, will attend the next Business Forum meeting on April 16.
