Last Easter was ‘like Custer’s Last Stand’

More than a year on from the February 21 introduction of the controversial one-way system and town planners admit there is still a lot to be done.

But some of the immediate patching up work has been carried out over the last three weeks in a bid to avoid last Easter’s chaos, according to the Town Clerk.

With a review by Powys County Council seemingly no nearer completion, the town council’s appeal for urgent tweaking ahead of the busiest weekend of the year has been heard by Powys.

“We talked to Powys who assured us that some of the immediate work that we have been calling for would be done,” said Town Clerk, Robert Robinson. “We have gone on record to say the one-way system was opened too soon without the appropriate signage and that was a cause for a lot of the problems last Easter. It was like Custer’s Last Stand at times with traffic circling the Tourist Information Centre.”

Clearer signage for Dolgellau and town centre parking is expected and coach companies have been informed that the Church Street Car Park can welcome buses again.

It is hoped that, a year on, satnavs will have been updated to alleviate the problems of last year which saw cars travelling the wrong way on the system and others making several laps of the town.

At times last year, the queue of traffic stretched to over a mile out of town, sparking protests from town centre businesses who believe travellers are now avoiding the centre.
