Welshpool’s controversial road system ground to a halt on Easter Monday, leaving residents and motorists wondering just how bad it would have been had the weather been nice.

By early afternoon, mywelshpool’s news desk was inundated with emails from angry readers who were either still stuck in traffic or had just arrived home following torturous drives through town.

Thousands of cars were crawling through the town’s back road from the Raven Roundabout as travellers made their way east in pouring rain, but rather than just read about the problems, mywelshpool decided to put it the test.

And we found out first hand just how bad it was. We joined the traffic just off the roundabout and an agonising 45 minutes later we had reached the Rhallt by-pass junction.

Very few cars were taking the junction opposite the Westwood to the bypass station entrance while many were snarling up traffic at the entrance of Church Street from the Back Road trying to reach the same junction via the Cross.

Our correspondent says it was horrendous and as the day continues, the road to hell looks like it will only get worse heading towards tea time.

Like we said earlier, thank God it wasn’t a nice weekend or we can only speculate just how bad it would have been, and the County Council-led review really can't come fast enough.
