Outcry over “life saver” switch to Welshpool

19/04/2012 @ 04:36

Welshpool is set to benefit from a new life saver, but it has come at the expense of another Montgomeryshire town which is up in arms.

Over 100 Llanidloes residents have signed a petition to protest at the decision to move a 4x4 life-saving vehicle to Welshpool, which has been based in Llandloes since the 1960’s.

Under plans by Mid and West Wales Fire Service, the vehicle will move to Welshpool to tow a water rescue boat which was also moved there from Llanidloes where 12 firefighters are retained.

But it hasn’t gone down well with Llandloes residents with one emailing: “This is ridiculous. How come something that has been so vital to our community in saving lives suddenly be deemed as not required?”

Llanidloes fire station watch manager Bryn Thomas said that if keeping the vehicle at Llanidloes “helped save even one life or one property, then it would be justified”.

The fire service confirmed that the vehicle would be moving in the early summer.
