Power station announcement “very soon”

National Grid has announced that it will reveal “very soon” where it intends to construct a 20-acre power station and position hundreds of pylons through Montgomeryshire's countryside.

In a statement, the company said it is “completing the final assessments to identify its preferred substation site area and route corridor needed to connect new wind farms in Mid Wales”.

The alarm was raised by AM Russell George last night on Twitter after he was told that National Grid was booking village halls for consultations in July.

National Grid has not given a date, but it is thought it could be as early as next week.

The statement added: “National Grid's project team has carefully studied and analysed the feedback received and completed further assessments on landscape, ecology, heritage, flooding, tourism and transport all of which are informing the final decision. The choice of route corridor and substation will be announced later in July.

“A series of public information events where residents can find out more about the project, how the decisions were made and what happens next will be held shortly after the announcement.

“Over the next decade, the country must make the major investment needed to deliver energy security. This project is just one step towards meeting National Grid’s challenge to modernise and extend the country’s existing energy infrastructure to ensure reliable power supplies for the future and help meet the UK’s carbon reduction targets.”
