Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.

OTMS (73)

A good entry of 73 over thirty month old cattle sold to average 128ppkg for the older cows and 154ppkg for the bulls. A British Blue cow weighing 888kg sold to a top market price of £1314.24 from Williams & Owen Cyffiau. Another Belgian Blue cow weighing 777kg achieved £1157.73 from R G Bebb & Son Hendre. An under 72 month old cow sold to £1318.68 from J W Hopkins Bank Farm. Bulls topped at £1318.68 for a Limousin bull weighing 891kg from W D Jones & Son Upper Scafell. Williams & Owen Cyffiau received the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price older cow sold on the day.

FAT CATTLE (9)

An entry of nine good quality fat heifers sold to average 209ppkg. A top market price of 230ppkg was achieved by GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf. GW & BA Haynes also sold other fat heifers to 229ppkg, 227ppkg and 222ppkg. H & W Howells Goetre sold four Welsh Black heifers to average 174ppkg. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf receives the Briarwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price per kilo animal sold within the fat cattle section on the day. Lights (25.5kg to 32kg) (508) to 215ppkg from N E Jones Gaer Farm. Others to 203ppkg from RG & BA Davies Tycoch. Average of 190ppkg.

Standards (32.1kg to 39kg) (1115) to 288ppkg from G W Griffiths Lower Penygelli. Others to 239ppkg from B LGriffiths Lower Penygelli. Average of 190ppkg.

Mediums (39.5kg to 45.5kg) (1871) to 220ppkg from DE & KB Owen & Son Rhallt Farm. Others to 214ppkg from B E Powell Cilpentre. Average of 190ppkg.

Heavies (45.1kg to 52kg) (319) to 192ppkg from I W Richards Park Farm. Others to 191ppkg from DES & ER Bickerton Lloran Ucha. Average of 184ppkg.

Over Weights (Over 52kg) (12) to 170ppkg from AG & JK Davies Upper Esgair. Others to 166ppkg from A E Casewell Bodynfoel. Average of 162ppkg.

On Behalf of the Shropshire and Border Texel Club the Butchers Fat Lamb competition took place at Welshpool Market. The Judge Mr Rob Pritchard awarded the prices to the following:

CULL EWE (1946)

An entry of 1946 cull sheep on offer for sale today, sold to average £59.73 for the ewes and £93.70 for the rams. Top price of the day for the ewes was £128 per head from G James & Son Penybank. Top price for the cull rams was £139per head from DES & ER Bickerton Lloran Ucha. Weekly sale of cull sheep to immediately follow the sale of fat lambs and hoggets at approximately 12noon.

COWS & CALVES

An entry of 18 cows and calves met with a grand trade once again with A J Lowe Plas Isaf selling a 2007 born Belgian Blue cow with a bull calf for £2080. A similar outfit from G B Pritchard Pentre Madoc made £1920. Jones Brothers Rhiwaedog sold tow Charolais cows with Limousin calves for £1700 and £1620. B Jones & Son Cwmtrefarlo Kerry sold three Limousinx 1^st calvers with Limousin heifer calves to a top price £1820 to average £1616. S M Ashley Upper Cothercotts Farm sold a May 2008 born pedigree bull sired by the renowned Wilodge Vantastic and going back to Ronich Hawk on the Dam’s side for £4000. Presented by CV & EM Lewis Garth Vaughan was a 20 month old pedigree Limousin bull sired by Altcliffe Bruce and grand sire Sympa for £3200. A breakdown of the prices achieved where as follows: £2000+ 3 lots, £1800 - £2000 2 lots, £1600 - £1800 3lots, £1400 - £1600 5 lots, £1200 - £1400 4 lots, Less than £1200 1 lot.

A small entry of Store cattle met with a grand trade for the cattle that where forward. Top prices where as follows:
