An impressive piece of furniture bought from a Welshpool retailer for £33 in the mid-19th century sold for £3,800 at auction.
The oak crossbanded mahogany combined clock cupboard (pictured) went under the hammer at Halls’ successful auction of antique furniture, ceramics and works of art at the Welsh Bridge saleroom, Shrewsbury.
Andrew Beeston, Halls’ senior auctioneer and valuer, said he believed the 97 inches wide and 106 inches high cupboard may have been made using oak from the Powis Estate near Welshpool.
Earlier this week we reported that it could fetch as much as £6,000, but the bidding ended earlier.
The cupboard, which was purchased by a private Shropshire bidder, was consigned by a Welsh border vendor, who also saw a Montgomeryshire oak dresser fetch £2,100 and rare English slipware circular press moulded dish sell for £3,000, double its pre-sale estimate.
