A new record price for a calf at Shrewsbury Auction Centre was set by a five-week-old Charolais heifer out of a British Blue cow, which sold for £695.
The heifer, owned by Eifion Roberts of Montgomery, was purchased by an East Shropshire farmer buyer after competitive bidding around the packed sale ring.
Auction centre manager Nick Hyne said: “We are delighted with this record price for a calf, which reflects the strong demand for all classes of calves at Shrewsbury. We regularly sell calves above £400 and attract buyers and entries from across Shropshire, Mid Wales, Staffordshire and South Cheshire.
“A national shortage of cattle is driving up prices and we need more entries to meet demand from buyers.”
