“Disgrace” as bowlers trash changing room

The normally placid sport of bowling has been shaken by an incident at the weekend when young bowlers trashed a changing room following a Wales Under 25’s tournament.

The incident has been slammed by Welshpool bowling international Wayne Griffiths who was in charge of the Montgomeryshire side that qualified for the semi-finals next month.

But the achievement has been overshadowed after players from a rival county, which has not been named, trashed a changing room at Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club after being knocked out.

“It is disgraceful,” said Mr. Griffiths (pictured) who made a winning debut for the Wales senior team last month. “Some of these lads need to take a long hard look at themselves. They are a disgrace.”

Mr. Griffiths said the behaviour of his Montgomeryshire side was “exemplary” on and off the rinks with players included from Welshpool, Kerry, Berriew, Newtown and Llanidloes.

“People put a lot of effort into organising these tournaments and the officials at Llandrindod had done a great job, but when something like this happens it must make them wonder why they bother.”

Players returned to the changing room to find it plastered in fruit which had been thrown all over the walls as well as into kit and players’ clothes.

Montgomeryshire qualified for the semi-finals after beating South Glamorgan and Ceredigion before losing narrowly to Pembroke. They finished second out of 12 counties and will return for the semi-finals on August 19.
