“We have been betrayed”

08/08/2012 @ 04:48

The Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales aid it has been betrayed by National Grid’s decision to go ahead with plans to industrialise a part of Montgomeryshire.

The energy giant confirmed last week that it would build a 20-acre substation close to Cefn Coch with pylons and infrastructure running through pristine countryside.

But CPRW has reacted angrily, calling it a “charade” and saying the landscape will be mutilated.

Peter Ogden, Director of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales said: “The location of the proposed hub substation at Cefn Coch, not to mention the massive pylons and power lines which will no doubt follow, represent National Grid’s shameful betrayal and the traitorous legacy they will leave on the landscapes of this beautiful part of Wales.

“Not only are the stunning hills and valleys of Montgomery being condemned to become gruesome industrial “turbinescapes”, to add insult to injury an even greater area will now be devastated by their massive hub development and its associated obnoxious boulevard of pylons and wires. Collectively the impact and damage that these will cause on this area may yet trump that of the wind farms and become even more despised scars on this landscape.

“Why should local communities accept that their surroundings should be disfigured for generations to come, simply because people in distant cities aren’t prepared to switch their lights off at night?”

CPRW says it will continue to object to the proposals and support the mass protests which have gained national new coverage.
