Fun for all the family at Llanfyllin Show

09/08/2012 @ 09:47

There's fun for all the family at this weekend's Llanfyllin Show with a special event lined up to tickle the taste buds of children attending.

The Slow Food Kids’ Taste Adventure, which is run by Slow Food UK, aims to bring taste sensations to life at Llanfyllin Show on Saturday.

The Taste Adventure is a simple yet fun activity aimed at four to 10 year olds but it is loved just as much by the big kids among us. It encourages children to think about food and takes them on an inspiring journey through five interactive zones, each with a focus on one of the five senses: taste, sight, touch, smell and sound.

Young Taste Adventurers are given a passport to complete and are invited to collect stamps as they explore, interact and make new food discoveries.
A free of charge event, the Taste Adventure showcases the ethos of Slow Food, which is dedicated to promoting the greater enjoyment of food through a better understanding of its taste, quality and production.
The Taste Adventure will be delivered by a team from Llanfyllin Show using materials provided by Slow Food UK. “We’re always impressed by the children’s enthusiasm and sense of exploration for food,” said Slow Food UK’s education co-ordinator Coline Kasperet.
“Some parents find it surprising that their children are genuinely fascinated by where their food comes from, but you only have to watch them running their hands through the grains in the touch zone to see that’s the case.”

Llanfyllin Show committee has introduced a real focus on local food and drink products in the cookery, horticulture and crafts marquee at this year’s event thanks to funding from Powys County Council, Welsh Government and the European Union.
In addition to the Taste Adventure, there is a Taste the Origin cookery theatre, where chefs will give demonstrations to promote Montgomeryshire food and drink products and produce from the show
Bethan said the show provided an excellent platform to promote locally produced food and drink products and also to engage children.
“The Taste the Origin cookery theatre and Slow Food Kids’ Taste Adventure will celebrate the wonderful local food and drink products that are available in the area,” she said. “There’s also a fun element, which will be enhanced by a cook-off between YFC members,
“The Taste Adventure is a fun and educational feature based around food and the kids will love having their passport stamped as they go from one area to another.”
Known fondly as the “friendly show”, the popular show is expected to attract around 4,000 visitors and competitors. Stars of this year’s action-packed event include the freestyle mountain bike stunt team Savage Skills, Mordor Gundogs display team from Perthshire and a ‘Village Green’, which features host of entertainment.
Always a highlight is the 2012 Royal Welsh Lamb Shearing Circuit Final, which brings together the 20 best sheep shearers in Wales in four different classes.
Admission to the show, which is open from 9am to 7pm, is £6 for adults and £3 for children under the age of 16. For more information contact show secretary Jill Hollinshead on 01691 828628 or visit the show’s website at www.llanfyllinshow.co.uk.
